Mississauga periodontics/gum disease

Periodontics is the facet of dentistry which encompasses the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis. These are more commonly referred to as gum disease and bone disease respectively.

What causes gum disease?
Bacterial plaque readily forms on the teeth and is recognized as the primary cause of gum disease. If left, it hardens into a rough, porous substance commonly known as tartar. Toxins produced and released by bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and can result in the breakdown of the fibers that hold the gums tightly to the teeth, thereby creating periodontal pockets which tap more toxins. As the disease progresses, pockets extend deeper and bacteria moves down until the health of the bone that holds the teeth becomes jeopardized.

What are warning signs of gum disease?
Signs include red, swollen or tender gums, bleeding while brushing or flossing, loose teeth and chronic bad breath. While patients are advised to check for the warning signs, there might not be any discomfort until the disease has spread to a point where the tooth is unsalvageable. Regular dental exams are imperative to detect gum disease early thereby improving the overall outcome of treatment.

How do you prevent gum disease?
Removing plaque through daily brushing, flossing and professional cleaning is the best way to minimize your risk. Our dentist at Glen Erin can design a personalized program of in-office and at-home care to meet your needs.
